코퍼스영어학은 코퍼스를 사용하여 영어를 기술, 분석, 연구하는 학문이다. 언어 연구의 전통적인 분야 중 형태론, 음성학, 음운론, 통사론, 의미론, 화용론과 같이 언어의 특정한 분야나 이론을 연구하는 것이 아니라, 코퍼스영어학은 언어 연구의 모든 영역에서 다양한 언어 현상에 대한 해답을 찾기 위해 코퍼스를 이용하여 언어를 분석하고 기술하는 일종의 연구방법론으로 볼 수 있다. 코퍼스는 언어학의 제분야와 결합하여 Corpus Phonetics, Corpus Phonology, Corpus Syntax, Corpus Semantics와 같이 코퍼스에 기반한 연구로 확장되었으며, 역사가 비교적 오래된 실용 목적의 Corpus Lexicography, Corpus Translation, Corpus-based Pedagogy, Corpus-based Grammar 등의 분야가 있으며, Corpus Stylistics, Corpus-based Literary Studies와 같이 문학이나 문체 연구에도 접목되고 있다. 최근 빅데이터(Big Data) 개념이 학술 분야를 비롯하여 사회 전반에 널리 확산되고 있는데, 코퍼스는 정제된 언어 빅데이터로서 언어 연구와 교육뿐만 아니라 생성형 인공지능(AI) 대규모 언어 모델(LLM) 개발을 위한 기반이 된다.

초반부 1~3회차 강의에서는 『코퍼스언어학 입문』의 내용을 포함하여 코퍼스와 코퍼스영어학의 역사, 특징, 기본개념을 상세하게 설명하고, 4~11회차 강의는 원서 『Corpus Linguistics and the Description of English』의 2장부터 10장까지의 핵심 내용을 이해하기 쉽게 보충 자료와 함께 정리하여 설명한다.
